This set of chairs is a reproduction of an original armchair built in Chowan County (1760-1790). It can be seen in The Furniture of Coastal North Carolina, by Bivins, figure 5.104. The original is owned by Ben Hobbs, and the chairs were built through methods, patterns, and instruction by Ben Hobbs. In fact, the set of eight chairs include 1 side chair by Matthew Hobbs, 1 arm chair by Ben Hobbs, and 1 arm and 5 side chairs by Calvin Hobbs.
