Primary wood is walnut with yellow poplar secondary wood. Inlays are boxwood, ebony, holly, satinwood, and maple.
I recently completed three of these sugar chests. The original chest is in the collection of the Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson, in Nashville, TN. It is attributed to William Winchester, a cabinetmaker working in Sumner Co. TN between 1799-1804. Using photographs of the original, I scaled and produced a set of full-size drawings to build the chest. The walnut used in my reproductions came from the grounds of the Hermitage and was cut in 1975 during a removal of damaged old growth timber. The lumber was air dried and has been stored in a barn loft since that time.
