Mahogany with eastern white pine secondary; aniline dye, amber shellac, and wax.
This is a reproduction of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts? Chippendale serpentine bombe chest. (See page 108 of The New Fine Points of Furniture, by Albert Slack.) To build the chest I relied on measured drawings and invaluable technical assistance from George Slack of Warrenton, VA, who was granted full access to the original. Irion lumber supplied the 23? wide 12/4 mahogany. As one might imagine, there was no shortage of opportunities for hand work. Oddly enough, what I am most proud of is the home made scratch stock I made to set the cock bead drawer surrounds!
