Queen Anne Desk

My entry is a Queen Anne style desk with offset turned legs and Dutch feet.  The piece was commissioned by a very important client -- my wife.  She wanted a work desk that was tailored to her needs, and matched existing furniture in her office.  A full write-up on the design and construction is found on the NC Woodworkers website at https://ncwoodworker.net/forums/index.php?threads/queen-anne-desk.79008/.  It was completed in February, 2024.

This is a modern adaptation of a period style.  I drew plans after taking measurements to get the optimal height and width.  Cherry was chosen as the dominant wood because it was a frequent choice of Queen Anne furniture and met the client’s wishes.  The sides are cherry veneer over a poplar core.  For a twist the drawer fronts and side top sections are covered with lacewood veneer (also known as leopard wood or silky oak).  The sides and legs are joined using pegged tenons as is typical.  Curved corners give it a softer appearance.  Work was completed using hand tools, some of which I made specifically for this project.  It is finished with blonde, post-catalyzed shellac for durability.
