Chest of Drawers

This inlaid chest of drawers is constructed with solid cherry and maple for a secondary wood. The case is dovetailed with an applied top. The drawer frames are dovetailed to the front with unglued mortise and tenon joinery in the back to allow for ample seasonal expansion of the case. The drawers themselves have applied beading around the edges.

The inlay was all done without any power tools (besides a bandsaw for cutting veneers). Each piece was cut with a marking knife and straight edge and refined with a block plane. The fan inlays are made from maple and ebony. The edge of each piece was blackened with hot sand and planed flat. The inlay was inset into the cherry by taping the finished shape to the wood and carefully tracing with a marking knife allowing the material to be removed with a router plane.  The whole piece is finished with a #1 cut of super-blonde shellac from shellacfinishes.com.
