Four Drawer Chest
This is an authentic reproduction of an (approx. c. 1775) John Townsend Newport RI, 4-drawer chest. The construction, dimensions and design were taken directly from an actual museum piece, and executed faithfully to the original, using predominantly hand tools.
The primary wood is mahogany harvested in the Yucatan Peninsula, and the secondary wood is Eastern White Pine. The two convex shells were carved and then applied, and the concave shell was carved directly into the drawer front. All dovetails for drawer fronts, backs and carcass pieces were hand cut. Hardware is cast brass. The finish was a hand rubbed, multi coat, high solids tung oil finish, with three coats of buffed carnauba wax.
