David flattens the back of his plane blade on an 8000-grit waterstone.

To flatten his 8000-grit waterstone, David adds pencil lines to the surface and uses a special truing stone shown on the right.

David flattens the 8000-grit waterstone by rubbing it across the truing stone. When all pencil lines are gone, David knows the surface is flat.
