Preparations are well underway for our Tidewater Chapter Meeting at the Norfolk/Virginia Beach Woodcraft store April 5th starting at 9 am. Guests and prospective members are welcome. The charge for the meeting is $30 to cover snacks, honorarium for the presenters, and a donation to the Moses-Myers house.

Following is the agenda:
  • 9 am - Welcome, administrative notes
  • 9:30 - Show/tell; short history of Norfolk and furniture built in the area
  • 10:15 - Chris Haycox; discussion on the design/construction of the banding used in the Bankson/Lawson secretary at the Moses-Myers house
  • 11:00 - Ray Journigan presentation on his "period" tea table (design, construction, carving) discussed in the latest issue of American Period Furniture. Also, check out Ray's Instagram page for construction highlights. Barry Payne and Jake Pell may also bring their tables and provide a good discussion on issues/lessons learned
  • 12:30 - Lunch (on your own) and travel to the Moses-Myers house (323 East Freemason Street, Norfolk). We can carpool from Woodcraft, and there's ample parking in the MacAuthur Mall parking garage.
  • 2 pm - Moses-Myers house tour
Responses requested:
  • If you plan to attend the meeting, please let me know.
  • If you would like to bring a show/tell item, please let me know. Currently, Chris Haycox is planning on bringing a Pembroke table (reproduction of one at the Moses-Myers house), and I'm bringing a footstool with Edenton style ball/claw feet (unique to the eastern part of North Carolina).
Other Notes:
  • Due to the low number of people interested in attending a Friday afternoon carving session with Ray, that event is cancelled.
  • Ed Sontag (Woodcraft store owner) is offering a 15% discount to SAPFM members attending the meeting.
One final note: The due date for signing up for Ray's handtool series of classes is this Saturday, February 15th. It is planned that these classes (a series of 6 to 8) will start this spring and be held the second Sunday of every month (all day) at the Norfolk/Virginia Beach Woodcraft store. Cost is anticipated to be about $150 per class. A tremendous opportunity to bring your skills and processes up to a high level. For questions, and to sign up, contact Barry Payne ([email protected]).
