sharpening a dovetail saw

I have been trying to locate a source for a 4 inch extraslim taper three square file to sharpen a18 tpi dovetail saw.I would also like to know the coarseness of the file that would give the best results.Any suggestions

For 18 tpi (= 19 ppi) you can certainly use a 4 dbl x-slim, but I wouldn't use an x-slim 4" file.

You can get a 4" dbl x-slim Grobet from Pete Taran at vintagesaws.com, a 2" needle file from The Best Things, or a 4" needle from Joel at Tools for Working Wood.

3 squares are getting less useful even in the smaller sizes. The edges are flats and even the smaller sizes they have gotten as wide as the Grobet 4" dbl x-slim so there is actually a cost savings just getting the taper saw file.

The edges on the needle files above are nice and crisp. Either will serve you well.

Take care, Mike
