Members of the Indiana Chapter met at Tod Herrli's home and shop in Marion, IN on Saturday morning.
We looked at furniture pieces brought by members. A spice chest by Mike Weber the chest was done curly and tiger maple from an early 18th century pattern. Sam Rhodes brought a walnut chippendale tea table that he made in a class at Marc Adams school several years ago. Tod Herrli brought down a queen ann chair he had made.
We exchanged our thoughts on the spice cabinet project and hope to see some more examples at our next meeting.
Tod Herrli began his presentation on the "Art and Mysteries" of the wood plane with a review of the types of planes and their use by the furniture and cabinet makers of colonial America. Tod took the old planes that members brought and showed us how to tell if you are getting a plane that can be tuned up for use or better off as a table lamp. The methods he uses are simple and can be done by anyone interested in buying old wood planes.
We took a lunch break at one of Marions restaurant that featured Greek, Italian and American menus so we all enjoyed our lunches. After lunch we headed back to Tod's shop.
Tod started show us how to rehabilitate the old planes we had brought, he spent the next several hours working on the planes and their irons. We tested planes after tuning and found that the majority of them worked quite well.
We all gained a great appreciation of the plane makers craft and the amount of precision needed to make the planes work. Tod's a great craftsman, teacher and we are proud to have him as a member of our chapter.
We finalized the day by agreeing to meet again in May and August, I will report on these dates in more detail later.
We adjourned the meeting at 3:15PM and headed for our homes.
