Our meeting opened with show and tell. Erik Blohm showed a lovely shaker sewing table and pincushion/thread holder. Dan Reahard brought the bonnet for a tall-case clock and discussed the carving.
Todd Herrli showed some of his planes including his latest using a brass boxing. Very interesting. Dave Boeff brought his block-front dressing table. It was finished with wax via long-distance instruction from England.
A gentleman whose name I have forgotten brought a panel raising plane and a bowsaw that he had built, along with a beautiful little spice box. Andrew Messimer and Jim Crammond brought Windsor rocking chairs.
Jay Houghton was a special guest who came to talk to us about Fiji Mahogany. He brought samples with a finish on one side to show as well as information on where to obtain it.
After lunch, Zach Dillinger, Ed Stuckey, Mike Holden, John Fitzpatrick, and Laurin Davis reprised the lecture given to the Docents from the Detroit Institute of Arts about the furniture in the DIA collection.
Zach Dillinger then gave a presentation on coloring wood. Showing how to make paint, how to grain, and how to recreate the painted furniture from the 1600’s.
Sunday started with Al Goldstein showing the uses of plastic in the workshop. Then Dale Ausherman and John Fitzpatrick present part two of making Queen Anne/Chippendale arm chairs.
