Red ochre and red iron oxide are both available from earthpigments.com. Either can be added to shellac, thin hide glue or other binder. Other earth pigments can be added if you are trying to match a particular color. If you are talking about the red wash on the back of some pieces I believe it's red lead. There is a post about it on Jack planes site.
You could get the same color but not the same effect. The pigment wash will be slightly opaque and the dye wash will be transparent. Which to use will depend on the look you are trying to match, you can't match a pigment effect with dye and you can't match a dye effect with pigment but you can get the same color with either one.
Thank you Millcrek and K Rush. I posted about washes here... http://pegsandtails.wordpress.com/2010/04/22/making-a-mulberry-corner-cabinet-part-eleven/
