THE MINIATURE QUEEN ANNE HIGHBOY
The Lone Star Chapter of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers held its' quarterly meeting on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31 from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. on both days, at the Woodcraft Store located at Cypress Station Square, 60 FM 1960 W, Houston, Texas 77090. Because of the classroom size, we were limited to 25 participants. Needless to say, the class filled quickly!
Jeff Headley and Steve Hamilton were our guests for this outstanding program. They covered the construction of the miniature Queen Anne highboy from start to finish. Design and working from photos, scale drawings and working out parts measurements, thickness, width, what joinery to use where, how to prepare the lumber, owrking out a leg, mortise and tenon layout and execution where and why, internal framing, drawer embellishment, enhancements to the case and mouldings were all covered in the discussion. Each section of the piece was a glimpse into the period construction techniques used to produce much of the typical Chippendale and Queen Anne joinery onward. A slide show of this and other pieces was most informative and sparked many great discussions and questions. Each class participant was provided with several drawings and a dvd showing the joinery of the highboy. Jeff and Steve demonstrated making a leg, carving a trifid foot, turning a QA pad foot, making a drawer with hand cut dovetails and making sliding dovetails in the case. This was, by far, one of the best chapter meetings that we have had!!
On friday before the class, I arranged a private meeting with Steven Pine, Head Conservator for the Bayou Bend Collection, Museum of Fine Arts-Houston and a tour of the conservation labs for Jeff and Steve. Afterwards, Steve Pine, Jeff, Steve and I were joined by O. B. Dyer and Malcolm Granberry for a private tour of the Bayou Bend Collection. This was certainly a rare opportunity! Special Thanks also go the Debi and Gerry Shoemaker for hosting Jeff and Steve in their beautiful home, to Jim Thompson for coming up with the LCD projector for use in the class, to all the crew at Woodcraft for allowing us to use their classroom and to all those who made this meeting such a great success. Most of all, thanks to Jeff and Steve for making the trip to Houston. You guys did a great job and we really appreciate it! Thank you all!!
