oil stones

I have an old oil stone that was handed down from my grand father and I would like to use it. Dose anyone know how to flaten it so it can be useable or should I just give it a proper retirement.

Jogrand,

I've flattened severely pitted oilstones by lapping the face on PSA-backed 220 grit silicon carbide sandpaper mounted to a piece of MDF. The MDF is flat enough to yield a fairly flat face on the stone and the sandpaper coarse enough to remove material. The paper will load quickly at first so you'll have to change it frequently. Once the face is flat, finish it off with 320 grit paper or a diamond stone.
