Master plane

I heard a while ago about some planemakers having a master copy of plane profiles to create molding planes.  These would have the reverse profile in order to create the profile on the bottom of each of the planes.  It was supposed to be quicker and easier to make.  Does anyone know what they called these?

Thanks,
Scott

Colonial Williamsburg has a large collection of mother planes that were used in the H. Chapin Union Factory. They were acquired when the company closed by an EAIA member who donated them to CW.
