MARY MAY CARVING CLASS
The Lone Star Chapter of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers will hold its' quarterly meeting on Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13, from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. on both days at the Woodcraft Store at 11707 West Sam Houston Parkway South, Houston, Texas 77031, 281-988-9449.
Mary May of Charleston Wood and Stone Carving will instruct a two day class on carving a period correct ball & claw leg for a Philadelphia lowboy complete with acanthus leaves on the knee. THIS IS A HANDS ON CARVING CLASS WITH INDIVIDUAL INSTRUCTION. Those of you who participated last year already know what a great teacher Mary is. Mary was one of the Presenters at this year's SAPFM Mid-Year Conference at Thaddeus Stevens College in Lancaster, PA, and just finished writing an article for the 2009 edition of the SAPFM Journal, " American Period Furniture" She recently completed taping two episodes of "The Woodwright's Shop with Roy Underhill which will be televised soon. Needless to say, she is an extremely talented carver and an excellent instructor.
Participation in this class is limited to 20 students due to the size of the classroom at Woodcraft. The cost of the class is $95.00 per person. There are currently 3 openings left for the class. Any current dues paying SAPFM members are welcome to join us. Leg blanks have already been shipped to Mary and she is video taping the entire process of carving the leg for our class. For an additional $25.00, you can purchase the dvd.
Each participant will be required to bring a cut out leg blank as in the attached photograph, his/her own carving tools, layout tools and sharpening tools and be ready to carve when class begins. Upon receiving your check, each participant will be mailed a full size pattern for the leg and acanthus leaves to be carved, a list of recommended carving tools and all tools required for the class.
We will take a one hour lunch break each day. Participants are urged to bring a sack lunch so as not to delay the start of the afternoon session. As usual, cold drinks will be provided.
