The first meeting of the Virginia Chapter of SAPFM will be October 18th, 2008 at Jeff Headley's shop (www.wwotsv.com) in Berryville, VA. The agenda is as follows:
8:45 - 9:05 Check-in and get name tags
9:05 - 9:15 Get lunch orders (Subway) /Introduction of day's topic ( making an 18th century Tidewater chair)
9:15 - 9:45 Design and construction considerations --- "key" angle
--- two approaches
--- chairs without stretchers
9:45 - 10:30 --- What kind of wood? / what size piece of wood to cut parts from? grain orientation?
--- layout and cutting / templates?
10:30 - 10:50 --- Break
10:50 - 11:20 ---- Back posts (legs) --- cleanup and shaping/ getting the "flats" right / marking the leg
chamfer.
--- laying out the mortises
11:20 - 12:00 --- Seat rails ----- back rail thickness (2 approaches)/ side rails ("twisting the rails") /
-- front rail (grain) / plan view of mortises and tenons
12-1 --- Lunch
1:00 -2:00-- Introduction to the Headley Cabinet Shop, and discussion of upcoming classes - Tour
2:00 - 2:30-- Va. Chapter SAPFM formative meeting - Naming of Director (President?) for 2009.

2:30 -- 3:00 -- Shape and mortise the crest rail before the splat (or does it matter?) / tenoning and shaping
the splat (chairs w/ straight splats vs. curved)
3:00 -- 3:20 -- Fitting the stretchers and overall assembly
3:20- 3:50 -- Finishing the chair --- stain?/ which finish?
3:50 - 4:15 -- Problems encountered in making chairs and solutions found
4:15 -- 4:45 -- Q & A
