cross grain veneeing

I am attempting to make a dining /parsons table (I prefer 18th stuff but the kids don't like it). I am making it out of solid wood and I plan to make 4" aprons on the end of the table the same grain direction as the top which means the apron will have very short, vertical grain. Can I cross grain veneer this apron so the grain runs horizontal without creating problems because of wood movement? I am not that experienced with veneering so maybe someone has some answers? Thanks Dave K

Whatever you do to one side (veneer), do to the other side (veneer), otherwise it will/may warp.

Yes that is a good reminder. I was wondering if that will restrict the movement of the top and cause splitting.

You could also just make your 4" aprons a bit thicker and not veneer the inside.
