Woodfellows,
We had a great meeting. A pretty good turn-out with the Thermometer at about -4 degrees F.  John Walkowiak, Dean Jansa, Joel Ficke, Tony Kubalak, Brian Grabski, Richard Cortright, Bart Genovese, Jim van Hoven, Tom Opdahl, and myself all showed up. We got our business out of the way right off. Our next meeting will be on May 10th (I bet it will be warm!) at Richard Cortright's shop in Stillwater, MN. Tony Kubalak will demonstrate carving a ball and claw foot. Upcoming topics will be Hide Glue and Hammer Veneering, Turning, and Frame and Panel Construction.
Several members are going to try to complete a piece for the MN Woodworkers Guild show in April.
Joel Ficke won the drawing for the door prize, Chris Schwarz's book, Workbenches from Design & Theory to Construction & Use. This is a great book and highly recommended reading if you are planning to build a bench or just want to improve the one you have.
Just about everyone took home a card scraper from the scraps left from the saw project.
Dean Jansa gave an excellent talk and demonstration on saw filing. His talk was well organized and it was obvious that he knew what he was doing. I now have a sharp rip saw in the bargain, thanks Dean! Special thanks too to Al Swanson, a neighbor and saw sharpener who toothed and pre-sharpened 30 saw plates!
I passed out the saw plates, backs and bolts and everyone tried out different handles on various saws that members had brought along for that purpose.  We took tracings and some photos of the handles. Everyone is going to try to get their saws handled and set for the next meeting.
We ended up with a fine meal of bacon cheese burgers and blue ribbon chicken cooked to perfection on the grill by Bart Genovese.
The shop sure seemed empty after everyone left.
I look forward to the next gathering.
Mike

P.S. John Walkowiak is now V.P. for membership  for the Mid-West Tool Collectors Association. Kudos to you John!
Also, a reminder that a Mid-West tool collectors meeting is coming up. It is on Sat. Feb. 9 at the Medina Entertainment Center (the Medina Ballroom)  It is a few miles west of 494 on HY 55. The buying and selling does not start until 8:30, however the doors are open at 7:30, coffee to drink and displays to look at until 8:30. There is a "guest" admittance fee of I think $12, refundable if you join which is $25 for a year.  Call or email John for additional info.  <[email protected]>
