Chesapeake Chapter Meeting: 3 June 2023

Added to Calendar: 06-03-23

Mark Maleski

We have made arrangements for our next chapter meeting to be held on 3 June 2023 at Olde Mill Cabinet Shoppe (1660 Camp Betty Washington Road, York, PA). Agenda TBD, but we will have a Show & Tell session so please consider what projects you have in motion that would be good for presentation.

Further details will be provided in this space.
Hi Mark,
Do you have any idea of the times for the meeting? I'm thinking of bringing an arm chair version of the PMA side chair that we made under Fred Walker's guidance.

Bob Elser (York, PA)
Bob, we should have the agenda ready in the next day or two. I’d anticipate a 9 or 10 am start, and end in late afternoon. I’m excited to see your results with the chair!
The Chesapeake Chapter is pleased to announce our upcoming IN PERSON meeting on Saturday, 03 June 2023, in York, PA, at the Olde Mill Cabinet Shoppe. Thanks to Bess Naylor, owner of Olde Mill, for hosting us. We will collect $30 at the door (subject to decrease, based on # of attendees) to cover the meeting costs. We have two planned presenters: SAPFM member Jeff Saylor and Bess Naylor.

We are seeking volunteers for the show & tell portion of the meeting.

Date: Saturday 03 June 2023
Cost: $30
Location: 1660 Camp Betty Washington Rd, York, PA 17402
Time: 09:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Please Note: Bring your own chair.

AGENDA (subject to change based on presentation durations, and show & tell responses)
1. Open doors at 9:00am
Arrive, relax, meet new people and have some coffee and Dunkin Donuts
2. Introductions and Show & Tell, 9:30am – 10:30pm
The “show and tell” is an ice breaker. Please bring anything you would like to show off. If you have a special piece, a project or even a jig, please bring them. For those who have not attended a previous meeting, this is a quick introduction, a display of your skills, interests, projects both past and present, a jig, etc. It can also be a request for help in a particular area to brainstorm solutions. After we go around the room, we will break for 30 min. During this break, you can seek out the other members who have similar interest and/or have already built a project/jig you want to build. This break will give you the opportunity to meet and establish a new friendship, pick their brains, and continue communicating with them after the meeting. This is extremely helpful for highly specialized niches, like inlays, marquetry, carving, and Bombay chests.

3. First Presentation 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Jeff Saylor, SAPFM Member, will discuss construction of a Chippendale Pole Screen. He will give a brief history of pole screens and their use. Then he will break down layout and shaping of the legs, followed by the pedestal and pole turnings. Next, demonstrate how to cut the dovetail slots in the pedestal using a router jig. Finally, construction of a tapestry frame to mount the tapestry to and the finish frame to go around it.

Lunch, 12:30 – 1:15pm
Part of your meeting fee will go toward lunch from Panera Bread that we will bring in.

4. Second Presentation, 1:30pm to 3:00pm
Bess Naylor has two great projects being worked on in her shop this year: a Philadelphia Pembroke Table, and a rare Philadelphia Line and Berry Chest on Frame. Plus, last year a Philadelphia Tall Case Clock. And a completed project from during Covid: a Pennsylvania William & Mary fall rent Desk with line and berry and 11 hidden compartments. She will discuss all of these.

5. Final presentation of the day, 3:00 to closing.
Mark Maleski will wrap up with a presentation on the recent session with Larry Barrett, Bert Bleckwenn, and friends to split a fresh black oak and bend the rear posts of a Poyner/Alexander “mule ear bent ladderback” chair. This will be a practical demonstration of using wedges, gluts, and froe to split some fresh oak that William Lohr has offered to bring. This is a topic that’s difficult to learn via book alone, so this work session should be useful for anyone who has desire to learn to split and rive green wood.
To register, please send an email to [email protected] so we can have a headcount, and to let us know if you would like to participate in the Show/Tell.
