SAPFM-FL: Fall 2017 Meeting, September 23rd
« on: September 20, 2017, 09:49:51 AM »
Society of American Period Furniture Makers – Florida Chapter
September 23, 2017 Fall Program
Local Member Presentations
Fall is fast approaching and it’s time for our semi-annual SAPFM Fall meeting.  This will be a single day event featuring presentations by our local Florida chapter members on a variety of topics.  There has been one change since the program announcement appearing in the Summer Pins & Tails newsletter.  Notably, Mark Sketchley will be out of state and not able to attend.

Here is a brief summary of the presentations:

·         Mike Fucile will be covering the construction of a Federal period demilune table from start to finish, including detailed instructions on how he did the inlays.

·         Pete Savickas will conduct an “Introduction to Woodcarving” demonstration, including wood selection and characteristics, tools and how to sharpen them, and basic cuts.

·         Jim Hamer will demonstrate the building of a sash door with raised panels, mitered sticking, extended tenons and curved muntins. This will not be a cope and stick door with matched cutters but done with routers, table saw, hollow chisel mortiser and various hand tools

·         John Norstom will show how to carve a pie-crust table top including layout, cutout, and carving of the table edge.

·         Bill Boehm will demonstrate his admittedly unorthodox method of sharpening and use of a traditional card scraper.  Despite breaking the rules, it works for him.

This program is open to all SAPFM members.  There is no cost to attend.  There are several restaurants nearby Jim’s shop for lunch.

The meeting will be held at Jim Hamer’s shop in Lakeland, FL (between Orlando and Tampa) off the Polk Parkway.  His address is: Hardwood Lumber and Millwork, 4316 Wallace Rd, Lakeland, FL 33812.  Doors will be open at 8:00 am for a meet and greet and the program will begin at 9:00 am.  A map to Jim's shop is shown below.
