New kid on the block
« on: March 05, 2010, 04:58:17 PM »
Hi, my name is Jameel Abraham and I recently joined the SAPFM. I thought I'd introduce myself before joining any discussion. It seemed the polite thing to do, especially the SAPFM forum seems to be frequented by, it would appear, a more conscientious group of enthusiasts.

I've been woodworking since I was a kid, getting my feet wet with both grandfathers in their respective shops. I've always had a great appreciation for period furniture, the simpler Federal-style designs in particular. Only in the past couple years have I developed a stronger urge towards period work. And some of this has come about due meeting several SAPFM members during that time. George Walker at WIA and several Lie-Nielsen events, Jeff Headley and Steve Hamilton (at WIA last year), Mike Siemsen, Mark Arnold and Steve Latta (Steve, your inlay work is an inspiration) among others. Other members like Al Breed and Phil Lowe for example, I recognize from years of reading magazine articles and books on the subject. I've built everything from carved altar screens to lutes, but it's period furniture that strikes my fancy at the moment, so I'm looking forward to enjoying (and hopefully contributing if possible) my SAPFM membership.

Thanks for the opportunity, and for those who make the SAPFM possible.

Hi Jameel,

Welcome to the forum. How are things at Benchcrafted?

For the uninitiated, Jameel runs a family business that produces tools and fixtures for woodworkers. Benchcrafted ran an ad in the 2009 APF. You can check out their site by clicking on the link in the left navigation bar of the SAPFM home page, www.sapfm.org.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the welcome.

Mark, things are going okay here. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again at the WIA show in Cincinnati.

Jameel - Welcome to SAPFM.  Your reputation preceeds you - if your period furniture is even 10% of the ouds you've made that I've seen on your website, you're likely to blow most of us out of the water. ;-)

Jameel,

So glad to see you joining SAPFM. Conscientious is one word I'd use to describe this group, but also very much aware and passionate about keeping this legacy of American furniture craft alive. I'm sure you will benefit as well as bring much to the table.

It's not too late to come down to KC on the 27th!  Would love to have someone as talented, knowledgable and experienced as you in the group.  Welcome to sapfm.  Cal

Would love to make it down for that show. But my schedule just won't allow it this year. Have a great weekend!
