THE LONE STAR CHAPTER AT THE HOUSTON WOODWORKING SHOW
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! IT'S TRUE! According to Ann Strong of the Woodworking Shows and the surveys filled out by attendees, our Lone Star Chapter booth was one of the most popular booths at the show last year. She called us and invited our participation in the show again this year.
The Lone Star Chapter participated in The Woodworking Show in Houston, Texas on April 3-4-5 as a way to showcase member's furniture, perform demonstrations, tell people about SAPFM and attract new members. Once again, we were successful on all fronts. We displayed 16 peices of member's furniture and performed demonstrations using hand tools throughout all three days. Our demonstartions were advertised in the official program of The Woodworking Show and on a large sign pillar as show attendees entered the show. Attendance seemed to be higher this year and there was a great deal of interest in our booth.
Our demonstrations included making and shaping a Queene Anne cabriole leg by Brian Honey and Layout and carving a Philadelphia ball and claw foot for a chair by Lee Ransom. Jim Thompson demonstrated chopping mortises by hand, making a post and rung rocking chair and hand cut dovetail joints and Gerry Shoemaker carved a drawer front fan for a lowboy. We also had on-going carving of acanthus leaves demos by yours truly. Chapter members were on hand to answer questions about the furniture and pass out brochures.
Because of a change of venue this year to the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas, a smaller facility, all clubs and guilds were given space in the hallways surrounding the main show arena. We were very fortunate to be located right in front of the only entrance into the show. This prime location gave us maximum exposure that kept us very busy to say the least.
Once again, the credit for our success belongs to all of those chapter members who worked so very hard moving furniture and setting up and taking down our booth, performing demonstrations and being on hand to spread the word about SAPFM. My sincere thanks to all of you for a great job!! In the process, we gained five new chapter members.
