There are many timbers used for turning the legs and spindles, elm for its wide trunk or ash sometimes, was used for the wide seat, a mixture of different wood could be used then?but all hardwood. (fruit wood was a favorite,apple,plum,pair) if stock was low and expensive to replace, the offcuts stack could lowered by making a few Windsor chairs. this product was developed as a (get me out of a tight spot). the victorion cabinetmakers were good.
