WIA SAPFM Booth

As many of you know Woodworking In America ( http://www.woodworkinginamerica.com/  ) is having their annual conference in Kansas City, MO on September 25-27.

Mike Siemsen has reserved a booth for the Handtool Olympics, as well as to represent SAPFM.  So we are trying to get a few brave men and women to volunteer to man the booth and demonstrate and present your work.  By volunteering you can get into the event for free (but full disclosure it does not include the presentations..). 

This should be an awesome time to show off our organization, and educate woodworkers from across the Midwest and further what we are all about.  And...it will be a fun time of networking and fellowship.  The local Gateway chapter members have been contacted, but I wanted to include any of you that plan to attend.

Let me know if you are interested and if you have some pieces you can show and things you can demonstrate.

To be sure, this is a fun event! If you want to help I will have a basic project (a simple bench to sit on) a workbench and tools. Usually what happens is you start building the bench and someone comes along and takes over the project with your help. We have had great success with kids. You are of course welcome to demonstrate anything. There will be a few pieces on display as well that open up discussion with people. You will have time to go through the marketplace and talk with the vendors and it is a great opportunity to meet fellow SAPFM members. I hope to see you in KC! Stop by the Hand Tool Olympics and maybe win a swell prize!

For those of you already coming to KC, there is one more opportunity I thought you would like to know about:  The 4 days leading up to the WIA weekend, Ben Hobbs, 2011 Cartouche Award winner is teaching a hands on class on building a traditional "neat and plain" Chippendale chair at the Kansas City Woodworker's Guild.  Great opportunity.

Many woodworkers as they advance to more detailed pieces never get around to building chairs, due to the complex angles and joints needed to make a chair strong and stable, and lightweight and attractive.  Ben will guide the students through the steps to successful chairmaking through the tried and true methods that he has learned and developed over his career, using traditional joinery and a combination of hand and power tools. 

This chair, out of walnut, exhibits the classic elements of chair design that can be applied to nearly any style of seating furniture.  Through this 4 day class, students will be able build their own chair.

Instructor’s Bio

Ben Hobbs has been a professional woodworker for over 30 years at his workshop in Perquimans County, North Carolina.

He has built hundreds of commissioned pieces, which have been delivered around the country.  Through his career he has been passionate about early American furniture, in particular the craftsmanship from the coastal regions of the Carolinas.

Through his woodworking classes he has taught hundreds of students since he began in 1994, and has shared his skills through organizations such as Colonial Williamsburg, the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, and the Society of American Period Furniture Makers (SAPFM).

He was honored with the SAPFM Cartouche Award in 2011 for his devotion to perpetuating the craft of period furniture.  Through the years he has restored several buildings that date before 1850, which are available for nightly rental at the Beechtree Inn Bed and Breakfast, which is run by his wife, Jackie.

Quick recap of the WIA booth last weekend...

First of all thanks to Mike Siemsen, Dale Ausherman, Ben Hobbs, Bob Van Dyke, and Bob Compton for their help and support for pulling together the SAPFM booth at WIA.  It was a great time for networking and sharing the craft that we all love and appreciate.  It was great to connect faces to names and voices to emails.

Also thanks to Les Hastings and Mike Sistek, Freddy Roman, Chuck Haas, Rob Young, Ron Lomax, Bill Pogson, etc. for bringing pieces, stopping by and manning the booth!  I'm sure there are other so I apologize if I missed you.

And in case you missed it, there were more Cartouche Award winners in KC per capita last weekend than anywhere else in the world!  Left to Right...Will Neptune, Alf Sharp, Phil Lowe, Ben Hobbs, and Patrick Edwards.

It was a great weekend! I am pretty sure there were some future Cartouche winners in the crowd as well! Cal Hobbs did a great job organizing the booth. Kudos to you Cal!
