Wax finishes

If you were to decide upon a wax coating as a period finish what type of wax might you consider? Maybee bee's wax! Carnauba (palm tree wax) is one of the hardest waxes I am familiar with so this might be a good place to start discussing wax finishes on period pieces. Much of the Eastern shore of the States (especially inland) didn't have access to palm trees so what wax finishes might they have used? Then lets talk waxes as a support medium for grain fillers.

I've used bee's wax and a heat gun on tools. I't makes for a great finish that's easy to apply. I plan to try it to freshen up a butcher block counter top work surface I have in my shop, if I ever get all the junk off it that is.
