Toothing Plane Blade

Hello All,
Does anyone know if it's possible to sharpen or "re-tooth" a toothing plane blade?

Thanks,
Dave Redlin

Toothing plane irons are sharpened just like regular plane irons, just don't flatten the back of the iron and remove the grooves!

Thanks for the reply Mike.... I recently picked an old toothing plane and some of the grooves are dinged up.  Is there any way to re-groove the blade in those areas?

Thanks again,
Dave

Dave, Almost any thing is possible, the question is, is it worth the effort? The old toothing blades were hand cut with a chisel before the steel was hardened , like hand made rasps. Depending on the damage, the blade could be annealed then tooled and re-hardened and tempered.

I would try sharpening it and try it as is. Toothing planes don't make a finished surface, so I wouldn't be surprised if it worked fine.

Thanks all for the replies!  I'll give sharpening a try....For what's it intended use...it should be OK.

Thanks again!

Dave
