Tilt Top dovetail

I was able to measure and photograph a oval tilt top table that I want to build. I have drawn up the plans but need one measurment. I was unable to remove the spider under the post so I do not know the size of the sliding dovetail.  The post is 2 3/4" Dia. The legs are 1 1/4" wide where they meet the post.  I came up with a tail of 3/8" deep and 1/2" accross the wide part.  It looks good on paper but maybe I am missing some structual portion that needs to be addressed.

Help!

Rich,

I've attached a picture from a drawing I made of a candle stand Gene Landon taught at Olde Mill a couple years ago.  This shows the dimensions we used.

Tom;

Thanks for the information. Based on the size of the leg width that I will be reproducing I adjusted the dovetails to fit the 63% of design based on your information. Now they look ok.
