Secretary Desk lock lip selvedge

Making a Secretary Desk and I'm trying to decide what selvedge (upper slant top will meet the top of the case) should be. Where the lock set will meet. I have seen some example with the selvedge is cut at 90% and some cut at an angle. I see that  Horton's has a lock set made at 105%, they say for expansion reasons. Should there be an angle there? Input please. Thanks Brian

Brian,

I've made several slant top desks and secretaries. It is best to have the rabbit on the top side of the lid cut on an angle (use the 105° lock). This will avoid the edge from binding when closing the lid. Think of the doors in your house. The edge with the handset (knob) is usually, or should be cut on an angle, to avoid rubbing when closing the door. This usually happens when the wood expands.

I hope this helps.

(Tip: for the angle symbol press the "alt" key and then press the numbers 1, 7, 6. The ° should appear.)
