Well-known member
SAPFM Members,
The Great Lakes Chapter has arranged a two day workshop under the DIA?s Artist Demonstration Program to be presented by SAPFM at the Detroit Institute of Arts on different aspects of period furniture construction and related historical perspectives. In conjunction with the workshop visitors will be conducted on a tour of the American Wing furniture collection. This is an effort to educate the public in different facets of period furniture construction so as to further their appreciation of the DIA?s collection and period furniture in general. Below is the release the DIA will use to advertise the event.

Artist Demonstration: Society of American Period Furniture Makers
Saturday March 16th, 10a.m. ? 4p.m., and Sunday March 17th, noon ? 4 p.m.
Prentis Court
Watch as DIA curators and members of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers walk us through several period furniture construction techniques, demonstrating how various aspects of actual pieces from the DIA?s American collection were traditionally made. Ongoing demonstrations and hourly talks will be followed by a short tour of works in the American galleries.

On Wednesday, March 13, 2013, the Keno brothers will be giving a lecture at the DIA. The DIA staff decided our workshop would be an excellent follow-up event.

This is a great opportunity to educate the public to appreciate fine furniture and to advertise SAPFM. Besides demonstrations and presentations we will be allowed to bring pieces of our own furniture into the museum to use as examples.

The committee working on the event includes the following members:

Ed Stuckey [email protected]
Mike Holden [email protected]
Jim Crammond         [email protected]
John Fitzpatrick [email protected]
David Cook [email protected]
Dale Ausherman [email protected]
Laurin Davis [email protected]

We need 2 responses from the members.

1. We are looking for pictures of furniture that members would like to display. We are looking for a wide range of periods; William and Mary, Queen Ann, Chippendale and Federal.
Small pieces such as bible boxes, pipe boxes, spice cabinets, are preferred.
If your piece is selected for display, you will have to transport them to the Museum and pick them up after the event. There is no storage available on site.
Please email pictures of pieces that are applicable.to: ([email protected]).
The committee needs the pictures by January 1, 2013. You may send in pictures of more than one piece.

2. We need presenters and demonstrators. We will have ongoing demonstrations throughout the day with hourly 10-15 minute presentations on various topics related to construction techniques as well as historical information. Below is a list of topics you may choose from. If there is a subject not on the list you would like to present, please let us know.
Keep in mind that no electrical tools are allowed, the only exemption would be hide glue pots (starting a fire on the Institute?s floor is frowned upon)

We need volunteers to present, demonstrate, and just to answer questions from the audience. You do not need to be present all day or both days, even a few hours would be helpful.
