Report on Great Lakes Chapter Fall Meeting 2015

The weekend of Oct. 24 and 25, the Great Lakes Chapter held their fall meeting. The meeting started with Mike Holden stepping down as the Chapter leader and handing off his duties to myself, Andrew Messimer. We thank Mike for his time and wish him the best.

Several members brought things to show. I brought an Alaskan sawmill/chainsaw mill to show the members a potential source of lumber from what otherwise would be firewood.

Bill Vetter better brought some brass hammers. One was his fathers, the other he turned using his wood lathe with wood lathe chisels and gouges. (Unfortunately I have no photo of Bill since he provided the pictures for this. Thanks Bill for recording our meetings through photos.)

Chris Tenney brought a spill plane used for making spills which would transfer fire from a fireplace to light candles, pipes, etc.

After lunch, the group held an auction. Steve Lash generously donated several boxes of furniture and woodworking books to the chapter. All told we raised $450 from the book sales and will put this money towards the purchase of projector for the chapter and/or possibly a future presenter. Once again the group would like to thank Dr. Lash for his contribution. It was Very much appreciated.

David Boeff gave a nice presentation on a drop leaf table he made in cherry. He shared his insights into the construction and some of the challenges he faced.

Ed Stuckey provided an update on the plans for next years Detroit Institute of Arts demonstration. This will be the chapters 4th year presenting. This should be sometime in March 2016.

Dale Ausherman gave a report on the SAPFM mid year.

John Fitzpatrick and Mike Holden discussed the Handworks event and Studley display in Iowa.

Sunday started off with Jim and myself finishing our boring presentation.

Chad Stanton demonstrated how me made “inlay” dovetails. This was interesting as it was something a friend saw that was most like done with power tools and an expensive jig but Chad came up with a way to produce them by hand.

Mike Holden shared a video he made from the Studley Tool Chest exhibit in Iowa.

Finally the group discussed topics for our spring meeting. It will be held April 16 and 17, 2016. More info to come.

Thanks to everyone who came and participated for making this another successful meeting.
