Greetings SAPFM Members! This message announces the Chesapeake Chapter’s next meeting on Saturday, 3 November at Woodworkers Club (11910-L Parklawn Drive, Rockville, MD). Pre-registration is required, though we won't close registration until the day prior to the meeting. Register for the meeting via an email to [email protected]. List the name of any guests you plan to bring with you. (The meeting is open to all SAPFM members and first-time guests).
Administrative notes:
1. Let us know when you register if you have a recently completed (or in-process) project that you’d like to present for show-and-tell. This is a great opportunity to show what you’ve built and share what you’ve learned. These session often prompt meaningful discussions on sources (materials, plans) and methods, so please contribute with a project if you’re able.
2. We will collect $30 from each participant to cover the meeting costs (exact change will be appreciated).
3. Lunch will be ordered through Panera – please let us know in your registration email any food allergies or other dietary requirements.

Our agenda for the day is subject to change, but we expect it will be as follows:
9:00: Door open, meeting set-up, and check-in
9:30: Meeting begins with chapter update. We like to keep this brief but do want to take the opportunity to plan for upcoming chapter activities with those assembled.
10:00-11:00: Introductions and Show & Tell
· For introductions, provide your name; where you live; your past and present projects, classes, and/or your interest; and your Show & Tell item if you brought one.
· The “show and tell” is an ice breaker. Please bring anything you would like to show off. If you have a special piece, a project or even a jig, please bring them. For those who haven’t attended a previous meeting, this is a quick introduction, a display of your skills, interests, projects both past and present, jig, etc. It can even be a request for help in a particular area. If you have any particular needs for displaying your item (e.g., progress photos you would like to project) please let us know ahead of time.
11:00: Group Discussions:
· Fixing mistakes (it is what separates the top furniture makers from the average furniture makers). Please consider what examples you have of mistakes you’ve fixed on your projects, and be prepared to share with the group.
· Woodworking and Furniture Books. What new books have been published that inspire or influence your build?
12:00-1:00: Lunch (Panera boxed lunch). Feel free to socialize and explore the aisles of the Woodcraft store.
After Lunch (1:00 until 4:00…or perhaps later): Reid Beverly (https://www.instagram.com/reidbeverlytradecraft/) will provide our featured presentation on building period-correct reproductions. Reid has over 24 years' professional experience with reproduction of 18th Century English and American furniture. As a master builder with Harrison Higgins in Richmond, VA, he enjoyed close relationships with interior designers, architects, and curators focused on the historic trades and decorative arts. Now on his own, he's recently begun devoting increased time to teaching his craft to students of all levels. For our meeting, he will demonstrate how he approaches common elements of period furniture and builds with a trained eye on classical proportion, form, and style. For example, he will draw on his deep experience examining period furniture as he demonstrates to us his approach to constructing the most pleasing form of cabriole leg.
It'll be a day not to be missed, and we hope to see you all there!
