RE Tenons on Leather Backed Socket Chisel

Everyone,

Stanley 750s and many other socket chisel handles use leather on the ends.  My question is about making a new handles.

How do you finish the tenon length.  Do you flush cut it?  Or leave it proud by about 1/16 of an inch and beat it down so that it mushrooms over the end of the leather washer for extra holding support?

Thanks in advance,
David

David,

Many of my old chisels have these leather washers and they are wearing out and still splitting the socket/handle.  I turn new handles and install a copper pipe union ring instead.  The union is from the plumbing dept. at the home center.

Dennis,

Thanks for responding!!  I do not use a mallet with these chisels.  So, I am not worried about protecting the ends so much as making the socketed handle correctly.

Considering the lack of response and looking at my other leather capped chisels, I think the tenons were flushed cut.  If I am wrong, please advise.

Thanks,
David
