From Bill Kafes: A very comprehensive book illustrating over 2400 makers marks on American wooden planes is "A Guide to the Makers of American Wooden Planes" by Emil and Martyl Pollak, third edition. The book contains biographical info on each maker along with an indication of the rarity of their planes. It's really a wonderful resource. If you don't find a mark you're looking for it may be you have an English plane. One source for the book is ABE Books.

During Jim Creasman's tongue/groove handplane show/tell at our Chapter meeting, the question came up about makers' stamps. Here's the company (mazzagliatools.com) Jim has used.
