Unfortunately, cabinetmaking has always been lumped in with other trades as the "allied arts". I am unaware of any book or resource, other than the pattern books of Chippendale, Benjamin, and others that make a direct link between the study of classical orders and cabinetmaking. Aside from the ocassional article in
FWW, Home Furniture, PopWood, and Woodwork, the subject has not (yet) been treated at any length in book form. There are some nice scholarly articles in the Chipstone
American Furniture volumes, but it sounds like you are looking for practical information that you can actually put into use. I can tell you that there is research being done today, much of it by members of SAPFM, on this topic. If you are near one of the regional chapters, go to a meeting. You can learn a lot from these guys
