Sad news about SAPFM Member Phil Lowe passing away this week.....Very nice guy, always helpful and eager to teach......

I did not know Phil but I had a lot of respect for him. The woodworking teaching world lost a great man.

The woodworking world lost a legend, and we lost one of our most valued contributors.  Phil Lowe was the SAPFM 2005 Cartouche Recipient, which recognized his dedication to SAPFM's mission. Along the way he contributed to many of our chapter and national meetings, coached and mentored many, and clearly formed many strong bonds among our members. He was one of the leading ambassadors for the understanding, education, and appreciation of American period furniture.  SAPFM plans to post a memoriam to Phil on our website, look for that shortly.  In the meantime, this is from SAPFM's 2005 Cartouche Recipient Announcement:

As a young man, Phil Lowe took a shine to woodworking, and through the years his interest evolved into a passion. In 1972 he entered the furniture making program at North Bennett Street School in Boston, subsequently becoming an instructor from 1975 to 1980, and department head from 1980 to 1985.  In 1986, he left NBSS to devote his energies to the full-time operation of his furniture making business. The business recently closed in 2020, was serving primarily as an educational tool for his furniture-making school, the Furniture Institute of Massachusetts.

Phil also appeared as a visiting instructor, seminar speaker and demonstrator at various schools throughout the United States and Canada.  He is the author of many Fine Woodworking articles and a long-time contributing editor. Phil is featured in the Time-Life series on woodworking and in several Taunton Press videos, including Measuring Furniture for Reproduction. He is also the recipient of the 2010 Artisanship Award by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America.

All,

Phil loved SAPFM! He was truly honored to be a lifetime member and a cartouche award winner. Phil was so generous and incredible in many ways. He truly will be missed.

Cheers,

FR

Very sorry to hear this, my thoughts and prayers to his family and friends. I met Phil quite a few times through SAPFM events.

I had the great pleasure of taking some classes with Phil. He was a great teacher, and an even better man. He will be missed.
