I just made a Pad-foot leg in the conventional manner as described in various sources such as FWW and Norm Vandal's book. Using this method produces a foot the same diameter as the square post at the top, in my case 1 3/4 inches.
While at Williamsburg recently I noticed two tables, one in the Coffee House and the other in the Geddy house. Both tables had legs where the square post at the top measured about 1 3/4 or two inches but the round foot at the bottom measured about 2 1/2 inches. I find this to be a more attractive leg than the one I usually make.
I'd like to try this but can't find anything written about it in any of my books.
Should I do this in the conventional manner by starting with a 2 1/2 inch blank, turning the foot and then the cylindrical leg to a 1 3/4 diameter just below the post and finally sizing the square post to the cylinder size by removing equal amounts of material on all four sides of the square post?
Or is there another way of doing this?
