each attendee to briefly introduce themselves – name, location, interests (both those related to period furniture and outside interests as well), past projects (both period furniture and other woodworking or woodcarving projects), plans for future projects
10:30 (Mike Mason) PowerPoint presentation on 18th century "chevalet de marqueterie" (a proprietary, hand and foot-powered device that you sit on, used exclusively by the French to create amazing fine marquetry for furniture and as stand-alone art)
- history & different styles of marquetry
- examples of fine marquetry, from the 15th century to the present
- two examples of small projects I have done with a chevalet, to be passed around
- step by step explanation of how the somewhat complicated Boulle method is done on a packet of veneer layers, using a chevalet
- how to build a replica of an 18th century chevalet
- opportunity for attendees to try sawing with my chevalet
- OPTIONAL: 20-minute video of marquetry expert W. Patrick Edwards on “The Woodwright’s Shop” (if time allows, or it could be shown during lunch)

1:30 (Michael Stiennon) Carving Convex and Concave shells
- how to carve convex and concave shells for use on block front bureaus
- different styles of carving and finishes (10-12 sample carvings will be shown)
- a detailed carving instruction sheet will be provided to attendees
- sharpening plane irons and chisels using water stones
- how and when to incorporate camber, alternate cutting angles
- setting up a plane, adjusting mouth and/or frog
- reducing tear-out on difficult woods
