First remember, a force (pull) is generated by the veneer glued on one side, without the veneer, the core is stable, you can use any veneer as a balancer, better the same thickness on both sides will even the (pull) generated force, you can join up all your off cuts to make a backing sheet, I say this as sometimes a job is not repeated, so its uneconomic to buy extra backing veneer.
