Moulding Plane Sequence

I have purchased over the years some ebay specials and have them sharp and ready to go. Is there a book published out there that would show the type of plane and the sequence in which to use them, so I can actually produce a piece of moulding for cabinets and the like? As I would like to purchase more planes, I want to be sure they do more than just sit on the shelf of the tool cabinet.

I've seen the "Basics" DVD and it is very good.  Sure would be nice to have that set of planes!

If I have a molding to make, I'll draw a cross section of the wood and start by drawing square cuts to use as reference.  I'll then start sketching in the various profiles and figure out a logical sequesnce so that I have material to reference from.  I'll even make out the progression of sketches from the full board to the rabbets then the coves and finally the round-overs.  I'll also compare the profile I want to planes or scrapers I have (such as side beads) and then mark the sketch with the plane to use.

I might cut a mylar template of the profile and trace it onto both ends of the board as reference.

In the past I've cut the rabbets or reference grooves with a Stanley 78 and 45, but I'll generally go to the table saw for these cuts.

You can rent two of the DVD's on SmartFlix for $10, w/ is cheaper than purchasing them. Here are the links:

Thanks for the replies everyone. JB, I checked the link out and Basics is backordered for "30 days or more"....must be pretty popular :)  I'll keep checking.  Rick

I'm a little late to this party, but Matt Bickford or MS Bickford planes has an excellent blog called Musings from Big Pink where he does this exact kind of breakdown using illustrations and photos.  Very helpful for this.  http://musingsfrombigpink.blogspot.com/

RWLASITA,

I am also late to this party. I have seen the 'Basics' dvd by Don. It's great.

I also run a blog http://musingsfrombigpink.blogspot.com/ that was referenced a few days ago.

I focus exactly on the information for which you are asking. (I think.)

If you have a specific profile you'd like to complete please send it to me. I will post the sequence that I would use. I'm always looking for suggestions. All are welcome.

I started the blog in December. I started at square one then.
