mortise and tenon

I was wondering if anyone could tell me which one is the mortise and which one is the tenon?

One way to remember is that morte is in italian, portuguese and french  the word for death. The opening is the grave or the mortise. The tenon is the thing you stick in there. Simple answer, male portion tenon, female portion mortise. HTH
