Mary May class schedule

Hello again. I have a few more classes scheduled for this year.

April 23 & 24 I will be at the Woodcraft store in Johnson City, TN teaching the ball and claw and it is turning out that there will be several people taking the class doing their own projects, so basically - whatever you want to learn, bring it.

May 14 & 15, I will be teaching out of my workshop in Charleston, SC - this is completely flexible for beginners or experienced carvers. The class size is limited to 5 people, so bring whatever project you want to work on.

August 13 & 14 Jeff Headley has invited me to teach at the Woodworking Workshops in the Shenendoah Valley (wwotsv.com). We will be going over a simple acanthus leaf and a more advanced acanthus leaf (similar to the one in this year's SAPFM journal) on the cabriole leg.

October 18 to 22 I will be teaching beginning woodcarving at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking in Indiana.

You can check my web site for more details: www.marymaycarving.com.

Also, I really really really hope to get the Newport shell DVD out in April. I am hoping to get both the concave and convex shell onto one DVD. It has been filmed, but I need to edit 6 hours of video down to 1-1/2 hours - not an easy task. I will post this when it is available.

Thanks!

Mary, some of us may need the full 6 hours of carving for the Newport shell DVD!!  If not, 3 hours could be great. Adjust the price for additional DVD's.

Hi Jim
A lot of the 6 hours are Mary May bloopers. It may be entertaining, but not much teaching.

The reason I can combine the shells is that the small center fan carving is exactly the same on both shells, so that only needs to be shown once. I may do one longer dvd, but I'm afraid it might be like watching paint dry and the fast forward button on your remote may wear out. I'll get this one into production and if there is feedback that it is too condensed, I can always re-do it.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Mary,
I, for one, would be willing to spend a bit more for a longer video. More time and closer views of the cutting edge would be appreciated.
Perhaps your next project should be basic carving tool movements. You B&C video, as most others do, concentrate on the shape being formed and not on the holding and controlling the tool. This is a "hole" in the available instructions.

I think that I can learn as much from watching someone make a mistake and correct it, than watching someone carve the perfect shell in under an hour.

Looking forward to the DVDs.

Mary, I have your Ball & Claw DVD and wish it were longer!  I have watched the DVD 17 to 20 times trying to pickup additional info.  Bloopers would be good, how did you fix the miss carve?

Thanks for the feedback. It is actually turning out that I won't be able to put both on one dvd anyway, so that sorts that issue out. I will take all these suggestions into account when I edit the dvds.

I do plan on making a "carving basics" dvd and also a sharpening dvd.

Another idea I have had for a dvd or class is making a turned piece (maybe a section for a bed) and showing how to lay out and carve leaves, beads, egg & dart, etc. for a bed post. Lots of possibilities....

Here are some examples of "bloopers" I'm afraid I'll have to leave out. Dog starts barking, Mary curses. Telephone rings, Mary curses again, Mary draws blood, etc. etc. It may have an adult rating if I leave some of these in.

Thanks again for your input - the more feedback I get, the more I can improve on the DVDs.

Hi Mary,  Ive had my blockfront chest project all completed for a while now with the exception of the shells.  I have your casts and they are the exact size needed for my chest.  I have just been waiting on your video prior to attempting to carve the shells just because I know it is coming soon!! That would be great if it was available in April.

I love the bedpost carving dvd idea as I will be making a carved federal bed soon.!!  Keep up the good work.  I will keep my fingers crossed that the shell videos are available in April.

I guess we don't really need the bloopers.  Just to see you actually execute each step would be a great help over following written instructions especially for those of us that don't have tons of experience carving.

Thanks for your efforts.

Newport shells DVDs are finished! You can get them from my web site www.marymaycarving.com and go to "items for sale".

Happy Carving Everyone!
