Low Angle Block Plane

Has anyone used the Bench Dog #62 low angle bench plane (14" long, frog at 12°) or the one by L-N or Stanley? I know it works well on end grain but I want to know if it works well on hard curly woods. Does it prevent or limit the tear out that you can get from a regular bench plane?

Thanks.

Hi Dennis,

I work almost exclusively in figured woods:  www.LineAndBerry.com
And I use the Lie-Nielson low angle jack a lot.  It's my favourite plane.
That and the little L-N bronze block plane take care of almost all my planning needs.

I also have the Lie-Neilson low angle jack and it's a dream to use on highly figured wood.  Always thought they were over priced until I tried one out at a LN event on tiger maple.  That sold me!

I've used the Lie-Nielsen and it's a joy to use.

I also used the Valley equivalent and found it a joy to use as well. I ended up purchasing the Lee Valley one, and have been very happy. I also purchased some of their extra blades, and it is like having several planes. It's also the plane I use for shooting and find it works great for that as well!

Thanks for the replies. I did buy the Bench Dog low angle. Rockler Woodworking had it on sale for $175. It planes great!
