Locks on slanted/curved drawer fronts

On chest of drawers, such as a bombe chest the lower two drawer fronts are very much off-vertical. some slanting in some slanting out, or on serpentine drawers that have a severe curve, no flat surface in the middle, how are the locks installed? If a lock for a slant front  is used the tongue is not vertical. I understand that locks made with sheet metal could be bent or molded to the necessary angle but what about the tongue and it's mortice? and that could not be done with an extruded brass lock. Would it be "period acceptable" to add and wedge piece of wood or plane a flat , vertical area on the inside of the drawer to aid in installing a lock vertically?.....Anyone have photos of such installations?
