Knee Blocks

As I was sawing out eight knee blocks for an oval stool I began to wonder what would be the best way to smooth the sawn surfaces? I ended up using a file and sandpaper-very tedious. I know the sawn surfaces are not in plain sight, but nevertheless they are pretty rough when they come off the bandsaw. Any suggestions? Should I even bother trying to smooth them? Whar about antiques pieces? Were they left rough?

If the marks have been left by a bandsaw, they I use a rasp to disguise the majority of the parallel tracks. If the marks are the result of hand-sawing, then I only use a rasp to fair the bare necessities.

I will use a chisel and gouge to remove the band saw marks. Some knee blocks were also held on with a cut nail.
