John Chipman Oxbow Chests

Hi,
I have a client that wants a Chipman Oxbow Chest like the 2 at the Diplomatic Rooms in the Department of State.  I have the overall dimensions but would like more detail about the piece or perhaps measure it.
I have not been able to find any documentation of the piece in the databases or museums that have digital content of their collections. There is a photo in the New Fine Points by Sack.
Has anyone ever approached the State Department for access or know of another place where the piece might be?
Thanks
Dave Boeff

Will the State Department allow access? If so, I wonder how much? (take out drawers, turn on side etc.)

You can get access to the state department. You can schedule tours here: https://receptiontours.state.gov/ and this is probably a good place to start.

You probably can get better access to the piece if you contact the office of the curator (Info on this page https://www.treasury.gov/about/history/collections/Pages/furniture.aspx). and write them and let them know what you would like to do.

You will be contacting the government, so expect slow response. I am not sure who the current curator is but they may be a SAPFM member. I would use phone calls first, My experience with government is that emails are filtered, some intern may read it and send a "we don't do that" form email back to you.

It's politics so be sure to name drop etc. If you are active/former military use that as well. Also contacting your senator, or congressman/woman may help get you in contact with the correct person, especially if your a donor. Their job is to help you (It may not seem like it, but that's a discussion for a different web page).

Be super flexible and have a back up plan, schedule a second date. This building is for official events, and you may be bumped if some official needs the room.

And let us know how it goes.

I am scheduled for a public tour, they said I can bring a camera and will be close enough to take pictures.
Really would like to get a drawer removed.
Thanks for the info. I'll get working on it.
Regards,

The State Dep't is currently closed due to Gov't shutdown...but hopefully that will be resolved before your visit.
