Hammer veneering

Recently I had great success hide gluing a couple of 6" wide strips of curly maple veneer on maple plywood.  However, since that worked so well on the paying project I decided to try doing it on a pine bottom for my sideboard that iam making.  The pine is abou18" x 20" .  I rooted around in the leftover veneer pile for something nice and tried to use some quilted saple.  The darned stuff buckled in a couple spots.  I laid on glue on the pine and both sides of the veneer then squeegeed it off with the hammer.  Should I have wet the veneer first?  I am wondering if the quilted grain had anything to do with the buckling?  Any ideas ?

John- Sometimes if you hammer it down too fast it doesn't have a chance to expand. Tack it down in the middle and work your way to the edges so it has a chance to expand. Definitely do not wet it. Try warming up the ground a little-Al
