On Saturday 29 April 2017 the Gulf States Chapter held its first chapter event. Since most of the attendees were not familiar with the SAPFM organization and how its events are structured, our event was designed to introduce them to vast amount of benefits and possibilities the organization has to offer.

Scott Wetter started with a description of the SAPFM mission statement and what is meant by the “American Period”. He discussed what new members could expect if they were to attend SAPFM’s national events and other chapter events. He then described the amazing talent, outstanding website, and professional publications available to members.

After a break, there was a power point presentation on the periods of American furniture and examples of their attributes. This was designed to get all of the attendees familiarized with the style names and makers etc. for future discussion.

The best part of the event was the discussion that followed the presentations, when the group discussed where they wanted to take the chapter in the future. Suggestions where given for future events, presenters, workshops, field trips, (4 members have already registered for the summer event at MESDA), communications, and advertising the chapter throughout the region.

Then, 5 members (John Byl, George Blanton, Ben Purvis, Tom Rassmussen, and Bruce Thornton) volunteered to create a steering committee for the chapter. Enthusiasm is high and it appears the chapter is off to a good start.

Thank you all for your great work in launching this new chapter and exploring the benefits and opportunities of SAPFM. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at future SAPFM events!  If I do not recognize you to introduce myself please tap me on the shoulder (or use a wood mallet!) to get my attention.
