Delaware Valley and Chesapeake Chapters: Demo @ Hearne Hardwoods on 30 Sept-1 Oct

SAPFM will once again join Hearne Hardwoods for their Open House on Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1, and could use your help!. We've participated in this event for 5 years running (2020 doesn't count!) and it's a wonderful time...those of us who've participated before look forward to it all year long. Besides being a fantastic recruiting event for SAPFM, it's a chance to meet up with other woodworkers, tool makers, and other craftspeople; listen to live acoustic music; eat good food; and see Hearne's large sawmill in action. Details on the event are here: https://www.hearnehardwoods.com/2022_open_house/

We have made arrangements to have two workbenches for our use, SAPFM material (pamphlets, sample journals, etc) on hand, and various sample pieces for discussion. What we're missing: you! We need enough volunteers to collectively cover the entire 2 days. While we would appreciate demonstrators, what we especially need are SAPFM members who can engage the crowd to share our zeal for period furniture and SAPFM. Specifically, we are seeking:
  • SAPFM members who can engage other woodworkers in conversation and describe what SAPFM is, how it can help them, and how they can help SAPFM. We will have props to help you out.
  • If possible, we need you to bring projects (preferably small furniture and accessories) that you have built or that you are working on, that will stimulate the furniture building desires of other attendees. The public will be interested in what inspired you to build the pieces, where you got your designs and how you built and finished them.
  • We would also welcome craftsmen and women who can demonstrate the construction and decorating skills and tools involved in the creation of period furniture. If you can describe verbally what you are doing and why you are doing it, that is even better, but far from necessary. If you can point out that the skills you have acquired are also applicable to forms and styles of woodworking beyond the particular period that is your main interest, all the better.

If you are able to participate, please send a message to [email protected] to let us know. Be sure to tell us how you might contribute to our effort, and for what timeslots. We understand most people aren't able to commit the full 2 days to the event (though if you do, you'll enjoy nearly every minute), and we would be just as pleased to have our volunteers come for a single day or even half a day.

Mark Maleski and Charlie Driggs, Leads for the SAPFM Chesapeake Chapter

PS - if you look carefully at Hearne's site, you'll see they list both the SAPFM Chesapeake Chapter and Del-Val Chapter as participants. However, we're not limiting participation in any way, so don't let that stop you from coming up/down/over to Pennsylvania from another region to join in the fun...and if you have a banner for another SAPFM chapter, bring it along!
