I have been carving for about ten years and have taken instruction from several people including two one week courses with Chris Pye. I recently purchased Cris Pye's sharpening video and I must say that by carefully following the techniques in the video I have brought my tools to a new level of sharpness and utility. Chris is trained as a classical European carver and reshapes the bevels on his gouges to a very low angle and then puts a on a back bevel. I know this is heresy to some but it produces a tool that "works" better. Chris stresses that a sharp tool is necessary but not sufficient; it has to "work" properly.
